Burning Permits
Overview
A Local Open Burn Registration Form is required to be filed with the First Selectman's Office annually. You can submit your Registration Form here; https://ct-roxbury.civicplus.com/441/Local-Open-Burn-Registration-Form. Once the form is on file you can apply for a daily burn permit on open burn days. Open burn days are determined by the criteria listed below. Open burn days will be announced via text message, you can sign up to receive Town text notifications here; https://forms.office.com/r/8MKKzbpT0X.
When you receive notification of an open burn day, you're required to call the Selectman's office at (860) 354-9938 to registrar your name, burn location and contact number. A voicemail can be left on either Patrick or Sarah's mailbox.
Conditions
Open burning is restricted for public health and safety reasons by the Connecticut General Statutes in Section 22a-174 and the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies. Prior to open burning on a residential property, the resident must have a valid, signed permit from the Open Burning Official. The permit does not relieve the permittee of any legal liability, which may be incurred as a result of the fire. Open burning is limited to the burning of brush only.
All reasonable safety precautions are to be taken. At no time during the burn should the fire be left unattended. Burning may only be conducted between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm on a sunny or partly sunny day, with the wind speed between 5 and 15 miles per hour. - Forest Fire Danger Index is rated High, Very High, or Extreme.
- National or State ambient air quality standards may be exceeded.
- Hazardous health conditions might be created.
- Advisory from CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection of any air pollution episode.
Violations
Violations of conditions of Open Burning Permits or burning without a permit will subject the permittee or person burning to revocation of issued permits, forfeiture of the ability to obtain future permits, and/or arrest for violation of Connecticut General Statute 23-48 (as amended by PA 01-150), which could result in fine up to $200 and/or up to 6 months imprisonment.
